When a burst pipe is an emergency
It is an emergency whenever water is spraying, pouring through a ceiling, soaking a wall or running faster than you can mop. Shut off the main valve and call right away, because water that reaches drywall, insulation and electrical boxes does damage by the minute.
We answer after-hours and weekend calls, and same-day appointments are available when the day allows. A slow weep from a joint is less urgent than a spray, but it can fail suddenly, so do not leave it for later without a plan.
The first ten minutes after a pipe bursts
What you do before the plumber arrives changes how much needs to be replaced afterward.
- Shut off the main water valveTurn a round gate handle clockwise or a lever ball valve a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe. If it is stuck, do not force it with a wrench.
- Open a low faucetThis drains the pressure and the leftover water in the lines so the break stops flowing.
- Cut power if water is near electricitySwitch off the breaker only if the panel is dry and you can reach it safely. Otherwise stay out and call 911.
- Turn off the water heaterSwitch off the gas or electric control so the tank does not heat while the lines are empty.
- Move belongings and soak up waterLift rugs, electronics and paper off the floor. Use towels, buckets or a wet vac.
- Photograph the damage, then callTake pictures for insurance, note where the water came from and ring the 24/7 line.
Until the plumber arrives
Once the water is off, these steps limit the mess.
- Leave the faucet openKeeping a low tap open helps drain the line, and closing it again can wait for the plumber.
- Clear the areaMove stored items away from the damaged pipe so we can work right away.
- Dry what you canFans and towels help, but do not run vacuums near outlets in standing water.
- Keep kids and pets awayWet floors and exposed pipe ends are slip and cut hazards.
- Write down what you sawNote when it started, where, and whether any work had recently been done there.
If you cannot find or close the main valve, tell us when you call and we will talk you through it. Replacement pipe and fittings are chosen to meet the California Plumbing Code (UPC based), not just to stop the spray.
Finding and closing the shutoff valve
Most homes have a main shutoff where the water line enters, often on a front or side wall, in a garage, or in a meter-side box. Learn where yours is before you need it. Test it once a year so it does not seize on the day it matters.
There is often a second shutoff at the street meter. That valve and the meter belong to the water provider, so for Huntington Park addresses ask the City of Huntington Park Water and Sewer Division before using or replacing anything on the utility side. For a leak on the buried line, see our water line repair page.
Pipe type decides the repair
The material tells us how it failed and what fix fits. This table shows the common cases.
| Pipe | How it commonly fails | Typical repair | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | Pinholes, corroded joints, a split from stress or impact | Cut out the bad section, fit new copper with solder or press fittings | Other thin spots nearby in old copper |
| PVC and CPVC | Cracks from sun, impact or stress, failed glued joints | Replace the section with new pipe and fittings | Brittle plastic that cracks again nearby |
| Galvanized steel | Rust from the inside, pinhole and joint leaks | Short repair or replacement of the run | Corrosion everywhere, which favors repiping |
| PEX | Cuts, fitting failures, UV damage | Cut out the fault and use approved fittings | Exposure to sunlight and poor crimps |
| Cast iron or plastic drain | Cracks, separated joints, collapse | Replace the broken section or couple it | Backups and wet floors below |
If old pipe keeps failing in different spots, spot repairs add up and a larger fix such as repiping may cost less overall.
Cracked or broken copper pipe
Copper is common behind walls and under floors in older homes. A split often follows a bad solder joint, a pinhole worn by years of flow or a fitting damaged during other work. We cut back to clean, sound copper, then join new pipe with soldered or press-fit couplings, and pressure test before closing the wall.
If the leak is one of several signs of aging pipe, such as green corrosion, blue-green stains or repeat pinholes, we say so. A patch is honest and legitimate for one failure. It is not a promise about the rest of the line.
What affects burst pipe repair pricing
The price follows the job. You will hear a clear number before work starts, with the repair method and the materials spelled out.
Need a real number? Call the 24/7 line. We will describe the repair and give you the price before we start.

Plastic supply pipe usually fails at fittings or after impact, and the repair is a clean cut and a new section with fittings. A drain pipe that cracks does not spray like a supply line, but it can flood a floor, soak a ceiling below or let sewer odors into the house.
Broken drain pipe repair means finding the crack, often with a camera, and replacing that stretch with matching pipe. For widespread problems in the main line, our sewer line repair page covers the next step.
Burst pipe or just a leak? How to tell
A burst pipe is a sudden loss of water with visible spray, a gushing sound or a rapidly growing wet area. A leak is slower, such as a drip at a joint, a damp patch or a meter that creeps. Both are worth repair, but they call for different speed.
Leaks you cannot see are a detection problem first. If there is no obvious wet spot, our leak detection page explains how we locate the source before opening a wall. Freezing is a rare cause in the Los Angeles basin, so we look instead at pressure, age, corrosion and damage from other trades.
What causes pipes to break here
Knowing the likely cause helps the repair last.
- High water pressurePressure above what fixtures are rated for strains joints. A pressure gauge on a hose bib shows your number, and a worn pressure regulator can be replaced.
- Age and corrosionOld copper and galvanized pipe thin from the inside, and failure can come with no warning.
- Damage from remodel workA nail, screw or drill bit can nick a pipe that fails weeks later.
- Water hammerQuick-closing valves send shock waves through lines. Arrestors or air chambers can calm it.
- Settling and movementShifting soil or a house that moves slightly can stress rigid pipe at joints.
Do not trust a temporary patch for long
Pipe repair clamps, epoxy putty and tape can stop a leak for a day, but they are not a repair. They are a bridge to the real fix. If you installed one yourself, tell the plumber, because it can hide corrosion that needs to be cut out. Permit rules vary, so ask the City of Huntington Park building department if the work involves more than a simple section replacement.
Questions homeowners ask
Yes. Our 24/7 line takes burst pipe calls nights, weekends and holidays. We walk you through closing the main shutoff, dispatch a licensed plumber and offer same-day work when available to repair the failed section.
Close the main water valve, open a faucet at the lowest point to drain the line, and keep water away from electrical outlets. Turn off the water heater, move belongings out of the wet area and call the 24/7 line. Take photos for insurance after the water is off.
Usually where the water line enters the house, often on an exterior wall, in a garage or utility area, or in a box near the meter. It may be a round handle or a lever. If you cannot find it, ask us when you call, and ask the City Water and Sewer Division about the meter valve.
Often the broken section can be cut out and replaced with new copper using soldered or press fittings. If the pipe is corroded or thin in many places, replacing a longer run or the whole system makes more sense. We show you what we find before recommending either.
Yes. We find the crack, often with a camera for buried or hidden lines, then replace the damaged section with matching drain pipe. For a collapsed or widespread problem in the main sewer, a larger repair may be needed and we explain the options.
Many policies cover sudden water damage, while the pipe repair itself may or may not be included. Check with your insurer before work starts, and keep photos, a written description from the plumber and your invoice.
Close the water if you can, then notify your landlord or property manager in writing at once. About 73 percent of occupied homes in Huntington Park are rented, so this is common. In an active emergency, you can also call our 24/7 line, and the owner can authorize the work.
Yes. We serve Huntington Park and nearby towns including Maywood. The same 24/7 emergency line covers them, and a plumber comes prepared with fittings for common pipe types.
