Start here: what kind of heater do you have?
Look at the label and the connections. This tells you which checklist applies.
| Clue on the heater | Type | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Gas pipe at the bottom and a flue on top | Gas tank | Pilot light and gas valve |
| Thick electrical cable into the top, no flue | Electric tank | Breaker and reset button |
| Small wall unit with a vent pipe | Gas tankless | Error code and gas supply |
| Small wall unit, no vent, large cables | Electric tankless | Breaker and display code |
Check one more thing before anything else: whether the problem is one fixture or all of them. If only one faucet runs cold, the issue may be a cartridge or mixing valve and not the heater.
The gas smell rule comes first
If you smell gas, leave the house immediately. Do not touch switches, use a flame or smoke. From a safe place, call SoCalGas (800.427.2200), and call 911 if there is danger or you cannot reach SoCalGas. Do not try to relight a pilot or fix anything yourself, and call a plumber only after the gas utility says it is safe.
Gas heater: three checks
Only continue if you do not smell gas.
- Look at the pilotOpen the access panel at the bottom and see if the pilot flame is lit. Many modern units have an electronic igniter and a display light instead.
- Check the gas valve and thermostat dialThe valve on the supply pipe should be parallel to the pipe. The dial should be on a normal setting, not at vacation or off.
- Follow the relight instructions on the labelUse the manufacturer's steps exactly. If the flame will not stay lit after one or two attempts, stop. A failing thermocouple or a draft problem is likely.
Electric heater: four checks
Switch off the breaker before opening any panel.
- BreakerLook at the two-pole breaker for the heater in the panel. If it tripped, reset it once. A breaker that trips again points to a failed element or a short.
- Reset buttonMost tanks have a red high-limit reset button behind the upper access panel. Press it with the power off. If it trips again, stop and call.
- Thermostat settingUpper and lower thermostats should both be set. A dial left at low can explain lukewarm water.
- Heating timeAfter a reset, give the tank time to recover. A fresh start needs a bit of patience before the water warms.
Sediment, scale and why the water runs out fast
Hot water that starts well but turns cold in minutes often means sediment. Minerals settle on the tank bottom, cover the lower element or burner area, and shrink the usable volume. You may also hear popping or rumbling as the unit heats.
A tank flush can help when the tank is in decent shape. Attach a hose to the drain valve, run it to a safe drain and let it flow until it runs clear. If the valve will not open or the flush produces heavy rust, stop and call us, since forcing it can cause a leak.
Dip tube and mixing valves
A broken dip tube lets cold water mix with hot at the top of the tank, which also causes lukewarm water. A bad mixing valve in a shower does the same at one fixture.
Signs the heater is finished, not just tripped
Water around the base, rust-colored hot water, repeated element failure, or a tank over its expected life usually means replacement. A tank that has begun to leak cannot be repaired. Turn off the water supply to it and call.
Repair makes sense for a thermostat, element, igniter or thermocouple, when the tank is sound. When the tank is old, corroded or leaking, the parts are not worth the labor. Our replacement team can walk you through the choice.
When to stop and call
Stop your own checks if any of these apply.
- Gas smell or hissingLeave and call SoCalGas or 911.
- Water at the baseShut the supply valve to the heater and call.
- Scorch marks or a burning smellTurn the unit off at the breaker or gas valve and call.
- Breaker or reset trips repeatedlyThe cause is electrical. Do not hold the breaker on.
- Pilot will not stay litDo not keep relighting. A failed part or a vent problem is likely.
What we do on a no hot water call
We check fuel or power, test the thermostat, element or burner assembly, and inspect the venting. Then we tell you whether a repair or replacement makes sense, and give a clear price before work starts. Emergency calls run 24/7, and same-day appointments are available when schedules allow.
We serve nearby towns too, including Cudahy and Bell. If the heater is an older tank, ask about a replacement while we are there so you avoid a second no-hot-water morning.
Huntington Park hard water and your heater
The City of Huntington Park 2025 water quality report lists total hardness averaging 214 mg/L in groundwater and 235 mg/L in the Metropolitan Water District supply. The USGS scale calls anything above 180 mg/L very hard. That is a likely reason sediment builds on tank floors and elements here.
So a flush and an anode rod check are worth doing on a schedule. Because the city blends sources, hardness varies by tap and season, so test your own tap.
For the code side, the California Plumbing Code (UPC based) is the standard plumbers in the state work to, and a contractor needs a C-36 plumbing license from the CSLB to do this work.
Questions readers ask
A failed heating element, a bad thermostat, or a tripped high-limit reset can all leave the tank with power but no heat. On gas units, a pilot or thermocouple problem is common. Safe checks are in this guide, and we can test the parts.
A tank takes a while to heat, so give it time before deciding. If there is still no warmth after a reasonable wait and the breaker has not tripped again, a failed element or thermostat is likely.
If you smell no gas and the label has clear steps, many homeowners do. If the flame will not stay lit, or you ever smell gas, stop. Leave and call SoCalGas, then call a plumber once it is safe.
Sediment, a failed lower element, a broken dip tube or an undersized tank are typical causes. Hard water speeds sediment buildup. A flush and an element test usually tell us which it is.
If water is leaking or you smell gas, yes. A simple cold shower is not usually an emergency, but our 24/7 line is open nights, weekends and holidays if you want help.
